Artemis Fyssa, M.Sc.
Artemis Fyssa is the principal researcher for Subproject 4, within Research Unit 2 and is a doctoral candidate in Sociology at the University of Basel under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Bilgin Ayata.
Artemis’ research interests stand at the intersection of politics and migration, especially the socio-political transformations that have been put in motion in Greece due to the implementation of EU and Greek state migration policies since 2015. She previously explored these questions in the project “Infrastructure Space and the Future of Migration Management: The EU Hotspots in the Mediterranean Borderscape,” during which she conducted extensive field work on the five Eastern Aegean islands where the EU Hotspot Approach is being implemented. She is currently working on the book chapters devoted to the Greek case study for a forthcoming edited volume on the Hotspots in the Mediterranean Borderscape.
Artemis holds a joint Master of Science in Urban Studies by Vrije Universiteit Brussel; Université libre de Bruxelles; Universität Wien; Københavns Universitet; and Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Her thesis examined issues of transnational contestations of urban spaces in Athens and Madrid. She acquired her M.Sc. under a scholarship by the Onassis Foundation. She also holds an interdisciplinary Master of Arts in Music Culture and Communication by the Department of Music Studies and the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies of National & Kapodistrian University of Athens. She received her Bachelor Diploma in Sociology (2003 - 2008) from Panteion University of Social & Political Sciences. She has worked as a web editor for prominent media outlets in Athens, and a project proposal writer and project coordinator for “Antigone - Information and Documentation Centre on Racism, Ecology, Peace and Non-Violence” in Thessaloniki.
